I was talking with a friend the other day and we were discussing affirmations and their positive impacts they can have on our lives. The Free Dictionary by Falex states that an affirmation is; ”Something declared to be true, a positive statement or judgment. A statement intended to provide encouragement, emotional support, or motivation, especially when used for the purpose of autosuggestions. “ My friend shared with me the story of Émile Coué, a pharmacist and eventually psychologist, who used “optimistic autosuggestion” when giving customers their prescriptions.
While working as an apothecary, between 1882 and 1910, Émile Coué began using what is now termed as “optimistic autosuggestion.” He would praise the effectiveness of the medication when dispensing the medicine to some of his patients. He began to realize that those patients with whom he had spoken to in this manner experienced a noticeable improvement over those patients to whom he said nothing. The efficacy of the medication improved yet the medication was the same for both groups. This lead to the belief that the difference was the mindset of the people and what they subconsciously thought about the medication. He never believed that he healed anyone but that he just showed people how they could cure themselves. “Coué maintained that curing some of our troubles requires a change in our unconscious thought, which can be achieved only by using our imagination. “
The Coué method is to apply the conscious autosuggestion in a mantra like manner by repeating:
“ Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”
It is suggested that it be said at the beginning and end of each day and preferably as many as 20 times a day. Oh great. Another thing to have to try and remember. We don’t want to be walking around with a string around our fingers all day as our reminder to say this affirmation 20 times. Well, here is a trick I heard years ago that can help you develop this new routine. One thing that we almost all do is walk through a doorway several times a day. Make a conscious effort to try and say the affirmation each time you go through a doorway. By saying the affirmation to yourself with feeling and conviction you soon will begin to experience positive changes in your life.
May your doorways become your entrance way
to a life with improved health, more happiness and greater success!
